Today, I wanted to take a moment to share some thoughts and reflections on my latest musical endeavor.

As many of you know, I've been working tirelessly on a new song, initially titled "Autumn Soul." However, as creative processes often go, the journey of this song has been anything but linear. It's taken a few twists and turns along the way, and now it's on the verge of a potential transformation into something new: "Letit Doosha."

Why the change, you might ask? Well, for starters, "Letit Doosha" captures the essence of the song's chorus in its purest form - it's the soul of the song expressed through the beautiful Russian language. It's been a journey finding the right words to convey the emotions I wanted to express, and "Letit Doosha" feels like the perfect fit.

Originally, I had planned to release "Autumn Soul" in late November 2023, aligning with the cozy vibes of the season in Russia. But as I delved deeper into the song's meaning and message, I realized that it deserved more than just a timely release. So, I made the decision to hold off on releasing the music video until the following autumn season. I want the visuals to mirror the nostalgic beauty of autumn, creating a harmonious synergy between sight and sound.

Now, let's talk about the heart of the song - the lyrics. They were penned by the incredibly talented Alexandra Rozhnova, whose words beautifully capture the melancholic yet uplifting reflection on life's mysteries and beauty. They resonated with me so deeply that I felt compelled to write the music to accompany them. It's been a collaborative journey, and I'm endlessly grateful for the opportunity to bring Alexandra's words to life through music.

And of course, I couldn't have done it without the amazing contributions of Nelya Bagryantceva. Her backing vocals, harmonies, and piano arrangements have added an ethereal quality to the song, enriching its sonic landscape in ways I couldn't have imagined.

As I sit here reflecting on the evolution of this song, I can't help but feel a sense of excitement and anticipation for what's to come. I know that I'm still an underdog in the music industry, but I believe in the power of perseverance and passion. And with each new song, each new creation, I'm one step closer to reaching my dreams.

So, thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for joining me on this journey. Your support means the world to me, and I can't wait to share "Letit Doosha" with you all very soon.

Until next time,

Marina
Marina Bloomtag:marinabloommusic.com,2005:Post/72386292023-07-08T19:28:41+12:002024-02-12T10:50:38+13:00July 9 show has been postponed to 8 October
Hi dear fans!
something beautiful springs forth.

A seedling sprouting from the newly invigorated soil after a fire.

The flowers blooming after the refresh of the storm.

The renewed zest for life and creativity after a period of isolation...

This song is one of those.

It was written during the COVID-19 lockdown with my friend Elena Yanevich.

Sometimes the purpose of a song is to invoke a feeling....

not to make you think...

It is a story of passion and dance, darkness, playing in the shadows and rhythmical soundscapes.

The lyrics are a more controversial offering than Marina's usually family-friendly content, but she felt it important to acknowledge her more adult side:

"Everyone has a darker side, even if they don't show it to the world - we all like a bit of excitement every now and then."

Perhaps in these difficult times of social distancing and restrictions on our usual movements, a bit of excitement is exactly what is needed.

The music video has a neo-noir feel to it, like something out of the 'Sin City' movie by Frank Miller. Think high heels, car headlights and manicures.

The lyrics, written almost a decade ago, are penned by longtime songwriting partner Michael Davis. The words are a reflection of the thoughts of his then-teenage daughter, Sabina, whom the song is dedicated to.

Presented with the lyrics seven years later, Marina was inspired to write a pop-country tune. It was decided to not release the song lest it labels her as a solely country music artist,

"I feel like my music is too diverse to be tied down to one specific genre."

But with the challenges of 2020: a worldwide pandemic and level 4 lockdown have given Marina a different perspective. She’s going full Marie Kondo on her music– releasing everything she’s got, to make room for new music to arrive.

The lyric video is particularly precious as it is created by Marina's daughter. Watch the lyric video animation here:

This weekend saw the release of 'Alabama Nights' the lyric video.

When you listen to it, you'll notice at once the soft piano and lilting voice. The song is reminiscent of a romance that didn't make it but left a pleasant memory anyway.

Michael Davis, the penman, loves a good American place name, you'll catch many throughout this song.

With the band, this song takes on a rockier vibe which you'll have to hear once quarantine is over with, but this version is calmingly simple, with an intimate melody and emotional poetry.

It follows on from the single ‘A Long Way from Home’.

Marina Bloom is best known for her album “Back Where We Started” which debuted on the New Zealand Charts at number 16 and her nation-wide tour at the beginning of this year.

While Marina says she is missing going out and performing across the country she is using this time to good use by writing and singing songs on a daily basis. She encourages her fans to keep their heads up and hopes this song will help.

“The song is perfect for anyone suffering from the lockdown blues. I hope it gets people out of their chair and to start moving. It was fun to write and to sing this song and I think this translates well on the recording”.

While the song is making references to the serious subject of faith and fate it is meant to be lighthearted and remind us all that we shouldn't take ourselves too seriously. The upbeat tempo of the music and Marina’s fun energetic singing ensures nothing but good times ahead. It is an upbeat, fun and a modern take on a great country-pop track.

The song will appeal to the whole family from the youngest child right through to the grandparents.

What if that is how other people feel when they talk to you?

The song Fragile is about love but a deeper dimension of it where you have to be so understanding and so gentle because the other person is not as strong as you.

The song came about from the lyrics by Michael Davis. I picked up the rhythm very easily and from the first moments it seemed to have a tango or Latino feel to it. Michael was surprised–in his mind, all the songs he writes start out as country songs. But I had a different idea.

The track initially was developed at the Sound Room and then received a new boost of energy from the producer Karl Benton who combined arabic and spanish motives in the arrangement.

The vocals and the final finishing touches happened in my favourite studio Manuka Studios where Mike McCarthy added his magic to the mix.

I am very pleased with it as it has a very hopeful feel to it even though the lyrics are quite sad in some places.

It is part of the new album Back Where We Started and today we released a music video for it which contains footage from the recent live shows of the NZ-wide tour.

You can watch the new lyric video here:
Marina Bloomtag:marinabloommusic.com,2005:Post/62556672020-03-20T16:49:59+13:002023-12-18T21:41:06+13:00New lyric video for 'Fragile' to be released next week!
Watch the teaser below and make sure you follow me on Facebook!

But instead of getting on a boat, she’s released a brand new song that’s about one.

Her album ‘Back Where We Started’ debuted at #16 on the NZ Album charts just six weeks ago, she’s a quarter of the way into her 8-stop tour, yet Bloom isn’t anchoring any time soon.

Her new song ‘Sincerity Ace’ is about a ship of the same name that leaves it’s harbour and never returns,

“As young adults we leave our parents, and sometimes our motherland, to take on this journey of life. Often we don’t go back. But if we do visit the place we came from, it’s not the same. We are no longer the same people, it doesn’t feel the same as it felt before.”

Having left her home country, Russia, for New Zealand as a student 17 years ago, Marina certainly knows a thing or two about journeys. But when asked about where her next journey is headed to?

“I think it is from one moment of ‘now’ to the next one. There is nowhere to get to or to be. I am really enjoying connecting with people through my music, connecting to myself in that process and hopefully through my music helping people connect to themselves too.”

Sincerity Ace is available now to listen: https://youtu.be/5U4FlgAioW4

Alot of blood, sweat & tears has gone into the making of this album and I couldn't have done it without my amazing team of collaborators who've worked so hard to make this dream a reality.

Big thanks to Manuka Studios, The Sound Room, Mike McCarthy, Karl Benton, Alexandra Lenarskaya, Tim Morgan, Darsha & Maya, my whole family, Ruth Power, Aleksander Brown and last but not least, Michael Davis for being my lyrical partner in crime.

And I wouldn't be anywhere without my wonderful fans. Thank you to everyone who has supported me through the making of this album.

You've already supported me so much, but there's one last thing I need to ask of you...

Most of us these days listen to music through streaming sites like Spotify or Apple Music, it's easy and convenient! However, in order for my music to be heard by more people I need to try to enter the NZ Charts! But in order to do that, I have to show lots of album sales, more than streams.

Though I would never tell you to stop streaming because these apps are so great, I would ask you to consider purchasing a download of the album from my website, even if you prefer to listen to it on a streaming site for convenience. This helps me immensely and I would really appreciate it, if you can afford it.

'One for the Road' OUT NOW!
Marina Bloom has barely paused for breath this year. In 2019, she has released five singles and is poised to release her sixth ‘One for the Road’ on the eve of her November 2nd gig at the Te Atatu Boatclub in Auckland.

Her prolific year is inspired by her mantra ‘life in full bloom’ which, she says, encourages her to go for her dreams despite limitations or setbacks and to not hold anything back. Marina certainly hasn’t held her songs back, ‘One for the Road’ is a longing tale of wanting that last drink with the one that got away…

“This song is very bitter-sweet. You know that you shouldn't be so close to this person tonight [an ex-lover] but you can't help it, it's magnetic. It’s especially difficult since you were in love with them once.”

The lyric video shows Marina performing the song live on stage, something fans will get to experience on November the 2nd at her Auckland concert. Concert-goers can expect an intimate evening of her all-time fan favourites as well as ‘One for the Road’ and more new material from her forthcoming album ‘Back Where We Started’ (releases early 2020).

The song is called 'Greetings from Sydney' and is a stunning ballad about missing somebody as you go through places that remind you of them.

The lyrics "I wish you were here, even though it was not meant to be" speak of loss, heart-ache, laced with acceptance of the twisting path of life.

"I'll send you a postcard, if I ever find the time, about the sights I've seen and what's on my mind..." tells of a lasting connection even if it's not everything she hoped it would be.

The stripped-back arrangement of piano and strings perfectly support Marina's velvet vocals – her heart-wrenching performance giving weight to the story.

Marina shares her thoughts when she co-wrote the song with longtime lyricist Michael Davis,

"This song always seems like a friend who you go back to with nostalgia. It is achingly sentimental… Like the times you want to bring back but you know it is impossible. So you just cherish those memories."

Whether or not she does find the time to write that postcard, we're left with a bitter-sweet taste of unanswerable longing and steadfast gratitude.

‘Greetings from Sydney’ is released on September 6 on most platforms, access here: https://song.link/i/1477156722

Marina is supporting the album release with a national summer tour throughout New Zealand in 2020. Before then, fans can see her perform at a number of Russian culture festivals in September-October and a headline concert in Auckland in October.

Inspired by epic love songs like ‘Bat Out Of Hell’ by Meatloaf, lyricist Michael Davis wanted to write a love song with epic highs and dramatic lows. He points out, there are not many scenes more epic than lions swiping pews and pulpit aside to ferociously attack one another.

Sipping coffees in a hotel lobby, flanked by a grand piano, Marina Bloom was presented the lyrics by her songwriting partner Davis and felt the melody come to her at a rush, immediately clashing with the unremarkable lobby music playing over the speakers.

“When I actually sang them for the first time, it sounded so grand. It was both significant and heavy, dark but irresistibly hopeful. That’s how it is for me every time I hear it.”

Concert postponed till June 16.
After all the lead up to the concert at Anthology Lounge in Auckland on May 26, I came down with the unshakable flu a few days before that I just couldn't even imagine putting on a performance that I would be proud of and that you deserve! So I made the difficult decision to postpone this gig till June 16.

I apologise for the inconvenience this caused, but I was overwhelmed by the support on social media from those who had bought tickets but understood my decision was a tough one, thank you for understanding!

I can only promise that the gig in June will be that much more exciting and joyful that we will FINALLY get to share this music together!

As always, thank you for your support of my music I am so humbled and incredibly grateful to have such wonderful people in my orbit!

'Not Another Ballad' OUT NOW!
WHEN APPEASING THE BAND PAYS OFF

Russian-born kiwi singer/songwriter Marina Bloom releases new single 'Not Another Ballad'!

The enigmatic vocalist has released her latest song which is a notable departure from her usual softer offerings. 'Not Another Ballad' is a bid to appease her band with an upbeat foot-stomping tune, worthy of a turn on the dance floor.

Marina has been writing ballads with her good friend and lyricist Michael Davis for three years. These ballads have garnered attention: national radio interviews; international awards; a viral music video in 2016 with her silky pop ballad ‘Heroes’; a #1 position on the New Zealand iTunes Dance chart with ‘This Feeling’ (ft. mPHATic); and most recently nabbed a highly-coveted top 5 placement in LA-based Songwriter Universe’s ‘Best Song of the Month’ contest!

If it were up to Marina, she’d sing ballads all day, every day. But her band had other ideas.

During the latest unveiling of one such ballad to her musical team, the band were less than enthused about playing another down-tempo song, unsurprisingly the jokes were led by the drummer… “oh god, not another slow song…” Some songwriters would sack the band, Marina listened and turned their jests into the next single.

The result is a foot-stomping, hand-clapping ear-worm with a country/disco feel and by popular demand – a quick tempo. Listening to this song you imagine sitting in an old American saloon bar nursing a cheap beer while the crowd are hovering somewhere between a line-dance and a brawl.

Think Shania Twain and the Dixie Chicks hanging out with Avicii and you’d likely agree, an anthem to a good night!

The song ‘Flying’ had a very interesting journey.

My lyricist and friend, Michael Davis, had read a book called ‘Fear of Flying’ by Erica Jong (a 1973 novel known for its contribution to second-wave feminism!) and the song had gotten its start.

When Michael showed me the lyrics, I heard the chorus melody in my head straight away. It took me a while to get the verse melody, but within a few weeks of December, 2018, the melody and lyrics were finalised.

We started on the production of the song with Karl Benton in February 2019 and it started to come together quite effortlessly. Karl and I are so in sync when we create music, he really understands the vibe I want in a song.

Karl added some amazing beats and worked on the arrangement and instrumentation so that it sounded larger than life! After Manuka Studio mixed and mastered the song (with the awesome Mike McCarthy) I listened to it once I got it home and it made me cry!

I was so incredibly proud to write something like this.

We’ve created a lyric video so you can sing along (link below), I hope you really enjoy it!

This is what Michael calls "a perfect little song". It is perfect from start to finish like a mustard cheese croissant toasted to perfection on a cold morning...

I am saying that because this is literally what we were comparing it to :)

In fact, I have to say there was something a little magical about how the music for this song came about. I was driving to Albany (North Shore, Auckland, NZ) one day for work, and on the motorway, I had this melody on my mind, but I couldn't find the words for it, so I was just singing instead - "Mirror, mirror, mirror, mirror".

As I got home I opened the lyrics that Michael sent to me in the morning, which I didn't get a chance to read properly before. As I was reading it I realised that the music I which came to me in the car, was fitting the verses perfectly. Then the pre-chorus absolutely came out of nowhere, sweeping me off my feet, I couldn't hold back the amazement that I had found that rhythm in Michael's lyrics! What was interesting that Michael couldn't see that rhythm before it either! The chorus reincarnated a couple of times, but then it became something much more grandiose than it was initially.

Michael Davis (lyrics):

"The Spy is possibly my favourite Moving Stuff song. It has so much atmosphere and, to me, is such a perfect blend of words, music and an incredible vocal from Marina!

I was walking through the Auckland streets early one Sunday morning. It was a crisp spring day; chilly but lovely and sunny. Just as I was thinking how beautiful the morning was, the church bells started to toll! It was so incredibly atmospheric and romantic at the same time.

For some reason, it reminded me of some of my favourite spy movies like the early scene in Mission Impossible 1 which was shot on a moonlit night in Prague. Or the classic black and white movie; The Third Man with its cobblestone streets and ‘baddies’ looking out from every doorway.

The first line was basically a reflection of exactly what I was doing: ‘Sunday morning, church bells ringing and this old city slowly coming to life’.

The image of a city waking up with ‘yesterdays papers’ blowing around just seemed so apt.

It didn’t take much to head back to the image of spies in the shadows and trying to stay ‘one step ahead of the game’

The two verses and the pre-chorus were written in the time it took to walk 4 blocks! It flowed so easily as sometimes lyrics do. One of my favourite lines was a deliberate reference to the James Bond movie; From Russia With Love which is not only a classic 007 movie but is also the birthplace of my wonderful composing partner, Marina!

Although 90% of the song was written on that morning, the chorus took forever! We ended up changing it twice from the original. It just never seemed right, always like a square peg in a round hole! However, we persevered and in the end, we came up with a much simpler chorus that worked so well with the verses and also hinted at a love story lurking behind the iron curtain with ‘everyone in Berlin’ sleeping with the enemy!

The Spy really is a song that delivers on all levels! Hope you like it!

The Spy
(copyright Bloom/Davis)

Sunday morning,
church bells ringing
and this old city’s slowly coming to life.
The wind is blowing
yesterday’s papers
and I’m walking the streets like I’m barely alive.

Cos I’ve been chasing your shadows
down dead end alleys
but you’ve always been one step ahead of the game.
But I’ve finally found you in my line of vision
Should I pull the trigger or invite you on in?

Nobody knows how cold it can be
When you’re falling for traitors and all lost at sea
From Casanova to Mata Hari
Everyone in Berlin
Has slept with the enemy

Monday morning
the week is calling.
and this old city’s finding its feet at last
The rain is falling
like tears from heaven
and I feel like an extra in ‘From Russia With Love’

Cos I’ve been chasing your shadows
down dead end alleys
but you’ve always been one step ahead of the game.
But I’ve finally found you in my line of vision
Should I pull the trigger or invite you on in?

Marina: This song was written in March 2016 - those were the early days of our collaboration with Michael, even though we already had written 21 songs by that stage, it still felt like we were still getting used to working together.

Writing the lyrics:

Michael Davis: ‘Houston’ came about in a very roundabout way.

I had the classic quote in my head (‘Houston, we have a problem’) for quite some time for no other reason than I liked the fact that ‘Houston’ and ‘problem’ were a classic example of words that don’t 100% rhyme but actually are close enough to sound ‘pleasing’ together.

That line then flowed into; ‘I’m coming apart at the seams’ which at that point was definitely heading down the usual ballad/broken heart route!

Although the outer space image somewhat continued with ‘Everyone seems to be laughing and I can’t hear myself scream’ (supposedly you can’t in space!!), at that stage I really didn’t have much of a clue as to exactly where the song was heading.

January of last year, I was playing around with some ideas to develop the song and right in the middle of trying to progress it, David Bowie passed away! Obviously, that was a tragedy but I guess it was that event that turned the theme of the song into being more about space as an escape from the world and its current problems as well as looking down on them from up on high!

That’s fundamentally what’s it’s about as well as being quite a large ‘nod’ in the direction of David Robert Jones!

Marina caught the mood with a lovely, ethereal (haunting??) melody that fit perfectly with the theme and hopefully it’ll stand the test of time just like the original ‘Life On Mars’

Marina: Nobody really asks a composer what the lyrics are about, but I am going to try to give you my version of it just in case you want to know:

I think it is about how apathetic and numb we have become to what is happening in the world. If it doesn’t touch us directly, it doesn’t have a chance to penetrate that layer of apathy we created. And it is not because we don’t feel hurt, it’s because we don’t want to feel hurt because we feel that there is nothing we could do to change anything. So we have a problem. We know what is going on, but we block it as we get overwhelmed by all of it and our helplessness.

Writing the melody:

I remember getting the lyrics from Michael that day, and then in the evening sitting down with the lyrics sheet on a couch in my living room. The printed lyrics were on my little keyboard which I placed on a coffee table in front of me. My mum was making something in the kitchen, my kids were watching something and I just started playing. Actually I started singing. Within the first minutes I have found the melody for the verse, then the pre-chorus which at that stage was the chorus. I played it and was mesmerised by the melody, Houston we have a problem, it had a magnetic quality about it. I just couldn’t stop singing and playing it. It had so much pull for me, I was extremely proud to harness that melody.

Developing Houston with the band:

That week I brought it to the band and as always the guys were reluctant to hear any new music. J It’s because I absolutely bombard them with my songs. We already had some 10 songs we were learning. But when I did play it on the keyboard for them – they loved it J

Cranna (drummer) said: “It needs a peak and it hasn’t got it yet”.

At that time the pre-chorus was the chorus. So we started playing it and while the guys we feeling their way through the song I looked at the bridge or a third verse that Michael has put in and just sang it, and the chorus appeared. And it was good. So it really happened in the middle of us playing it and it had never happened before like that.

Recording the song with the band:

We recorded it in Depot Sound on Sunday 15th of May, the day before my birthday which was very cool. First half a day we spent setting up drums and getting them right and the second part went really quick. There were still some vocals to do the following week so Josh and I had to come back for that. We had Michael with us in the studio and some friends and family were popping in from time to time. It was a long day but very rewarding. I learnt a lot from that session. Dave (the sound engineer) thought that we were going to give him direction as a band, he didn’t know that I was the main music brain behind it. It wasn’t exactly what I thought it would be, but I don’t think we could get it any better anyway with the pool of ideas we had at the time.

The song was an opening track to the album When I Am Gone released in December 2016. It was reviewed in Elsewhere:

"There's a very retro feel about these songs — their roots often in the Seventies and Eighties – but Bloom possesses a voice which could cut through at mainstream radio with the five-minute 'Houston We Have a Problem' which again works that restrained power ballad idiom and lyrically references Bowie/Life on Mars." Graham Reid

Later in the year it was picked up by Phil O'Brien (RadioNZ) on Saturday night requests and has had great feedback from people all over the world.

We would love to know what you think about this song, please post your comments below.

Lyrics:

Houston (We Have A Problem)

(Bloom/Davis 5/4/2016)

Verse 1

Everybody wants to know

is there life on Mars?

David Bowie wondered once

now he's lost in the stars

Everybody likes to dream

of worlds so faraway

We're lining up alibis

and planning our escape

Pre Chorus:

But Houston we have a problem

I'm coming apart at the seams

Everyone seems to be laughing

and I can't hear myself scream!

Houston, I can't believe it

I'm floating around here in space.

I'm a latter day rocket man

who's lost his poker face

Chorus:

And I look down on the world below

a million miles away

The closer I get to heaven's gate

the less I seem to pray

Verse 2

Everybody's laying low

while the time flies past.

David Bowie sold the world

now he’s resting in peace

Everybody needs a dream

to keep our lives fulfilled

So we're lining up alibis

and heading for the hills.

Bridge:

And it's a crazy old world,

this world that we live in

We all want fame and gold

and we're fighting for glory

and storybook endings
